Airtel Hits 650 Million Subscribers to Become World’s Second-Largest Mobile Operator

Bharti Airtel has officially crossed the 650 million subscriber mark; this milestone pushes them past every other player on the planet except for China Mobile. This is how I'm finding out that Airtel is from India. Apparently, they acquired Zain, and that's how they set up their African footprint. Anyways, back to the news.

In India, the company commands 368 million users. Across 14 African markets, they have secured 179 million subscribers.

Airtel is morphing into a full-scale financial and infrastructure giant. Airtel Money now serves over 52 million users in Africa, providing a lifeline where traditional banks have failed to build branches. By processing billions in transactions, they have become the de facto financial hub for millions of entrepreneurs.

They are also moving into high-tech territory to solve the problem of dead zones. Through partnerships with SpaceX and Eutelsat OneWeb, the goal is to provide satellite-based broadband to remote corners of the continent.

The New Architecture of Power We are seeing a transition from being a tenant on other people's infrastructure to owning the entire stack. Airtel Business is now pitching cloud computing, cybersecurity, and IoT solutions to enterprises.

The upcoming IPO for the mobile money arm in 2026 will likely be the next major catalyst. Airtel is ready to decouple its high-growth fintech business from its traditional telco roots.
