Apple Launches Its First Foldable iPhone at $1,999

Apple has launched its first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, with a starting price of $1,999, or roughly KSh259,000 before taxes and other costs.

The phone folds like a book and has a 5.4-inch outer display that opens into a 7.6-inch inner screen. Apple has given it a titanium frame and Ceramic Shield protection, while the company says the Duo is the thinnest iPhone it has made.

Inside, the iPhone Duo runs on Apple's A20 Pro chip and uses a vapour chamber cooling system. Apple says the phone can deliver up to 31 hours of video playback.

The camera setup includes a 48-megapixel main camera and a 12-megapixel 2x telephoto camera. It can also record 4K video at up to 120fps.

There is another important change for users in Kenya and other markets. The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only, meaning Apple has removed the physical SIM card slot entirely.

The $1,999 starting price translates to about KSh259,000 at current exchange rates, although Kenyan buyers should expect the local price to be higher once taxes, shipping and retailer margins are included.

Apple will open pre-orders for the iPhone Duo on October 16, with the phone going on sale from October 23.
