Kenswitch and Visa Partner to Accelerate Payment Innovation in Kenya

Kenswitch and Visa have entered a partnership to overhaul Kenya’s domestic payment processing and settlement systems. This collaboration links Kenswitch’s local infrastructure, which connects over 29 financial institutions, with Visa’s global technology to align with the Central Bank of Kenya’s National Payments Strategy.

Kenswitch has spent two decades acting as the primary interoperable bridge for ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, and agency banking in the country. By plugging into Visa’s ecosystem,we are looking at faster transaction speeds and a more resilient technical foundation for the banks and fintechs currently utilizing Kenswitch’s network.

We should expect several tangible improvements from this integration:

  1. Enhanced Security: Integration of Visa’s value-added services specifically for fraud prevention and risk management.

  2. Merchant Acceptance: A push to streamline how small and medium businesses handle digital payments, reducing the friction often found in current local processing.

  3. Data Utilization: New tools for financial institutions to leverage transaction data for operational efficiency and product development.

  4. Infrastructure Reliability: Modernizing the plumbing of the financial system to ensure higher uptime and better handling of high-volume digital traffic.

The partnership provides a standardized framework for next-generation processing that benefits the entire financial ecosystem; making the domestic movement of capital more secure and efficient for everyone involved.
