Kenyan Startup Zerobionic Selected for Qualcomm’s 2026 Make in Africa Mentorship Programme

The Qualcomm Make in Africa 2026 cohort has been finalized, and our own Zerobionic is the only Kenyan startup to make the cut. Selected from a pool of 1,200 applicants across 45 countries, the startup is moving into an intensive engineering-led mentorship phase focused on scaling its assistive robotics.

Founded by 21-year-old Maxwell Opondo, Zerobionic develops 3D-printed humanoid robots that translate spoken language into sign language in real-time. The hardware is manufactured from recycled plastic waste, while the software utilizes machine vision and machine learning to achieve a 92% translation accuracy.

Classroom Integration and Impact

The startup’s primary application is classroom integration. By acting as live interpreters, these robots allow students with hearing impairments to access STEM subjects—a curriculum area often restricted by a lack of specialized sign language teachers. Early pilot programs in Garissa, Machakos, and Kirinyaga have already demonstrated increased engagement in technical subjects among deaf students.

Regional Context

Zerobionic sits alongside nine other startups from countries including Nigeria, Ghana, and Namibia, all focused on hardware-centric solutions for agriculture, water monitoring, and electric mobility. This selection follows a strong track record for Kenya in the program, following last year’s win by Farmer Lifeline.

The mentorship will run through the remainder of 2026. For Zerobionic, the focus is now on transitioning from successful school pilots to a scalable model that can be deployed across the continent’s education systems.
