M-Pesa Launches Contactless ‘Tap-to-Pay’ for Tanzanian Smartphone Users

Vodacom Tanzania and M-Pesa Africa have officially went live with a "Tap-to-Pay" feature within the M-Pesa SuperApp. This rollout, powered by partnerships with Visa and Paymentology, allows users to settle bills by hovering their smartphones over any compatible payment terminal.

The integration functions through a virtual Visa card stored directly in the app. This setup enables M-Pesa's balance to interact with the global banking infrastructure for the first time. Android users with NFC-enabled devices can now transact at millions of Visa-supported points of sale worldwide. This move effectively shifts M-Pesa from a local peer-to-peer tool into a global financial instrument.

Security is handled via Paymentology’s cloud-based tokenization. This process replaces sensitive financial data with unique digital tokens, ensuring that actual card details are never exposed during the transaction. Epimack Mbeteni, M-Pesa Director at Vodacom Tanzania, noted that the launch simplifies the payment process by removing the friction of traditional card swipes or cash handling.

While the service remains an Android exclusive for now, the geographical reach is the real story here. A Tanzanian traveler can use their M-Pesa balance in London or Dubai just as easily as in Dar es Salaam. This partnership reflects a maturing fintech ecosystem in East Africa where mobile money providers are taking on the role of traditional banks. M-Pesa is no longer confined to USSD menus.
