MTN nears 100 million subscriptions as Nigeria’s mobile database hits 189.4 million

MTN Nigeria Is 3 Million Subscribers Away From a Historic 100 Million

The number tells one story. The money behind it tells another.

MTN Nigeria ended May with 96.9 million active subscriptions. That puts the continent's largest telco within striking distance of a milestone no Nigerian network operator has ever hit: 100 million subscribers in a single country.

The Nigerian Communications Commission confirmed the figure as part of its latest industry data, which put total mobile subscriptions across all four networks at 189.4 million. MTN alone accounts for 51.19% of that. In a market with four operators, one company holds more than half.

What the Market Actually Looks Like

Airtel Nigeria sits in second place with 65.4 million subscriptions and a 34.55% market share. Globacom follows with 23.4 million. Then there's T2, formerly 9mobile, which once had more than 22 million subscribers and now sits at 3.5 million, a position it has barely moved from since September 2025. An infrastructure sharing deal with MTN signed last July hasn't changed much.

The gap between the top two and the bottom two isn't just large. It's structural.

The Revenue Story Is the Real Headline

Subscriber counts are interesting, but MTN's financial results explain why this growth momentum matters beyond the numbers on a chart.

For the first half of 2026, MTN recorded a profit before tax of N1.09 trillion, a 75.4% year-on-year increase and the highest half-year performance in the company's Nigerian history. Revenue grew 25.9% to N2.99 trillion despite a macroeconomic environment that has squeezed businesses across the country. CEO Karl Toriola credited strong data demand, tighter operational efficiency, and reduced borrowing costs.

Every subscriber MTN adds is not just a SIM card. It's a data customer, a potential MoMo user, a monthly revenue line.

The Infrastructure Bet

Growing to 100 million subscribers creates its own pressure. Networks get congested, quality drops, and customers notice. The NCC has already flagged this, pushing operators to commit to 12,000 site upgrades in 2026, compared to just over 3,000 completed in all of 2025.

The upgrades include spectrum deployment on existing 4G sites and the conversion of older 2G and 3G infrastructure to 4G and 5G. Whether operators can execute at that pace while managing costs in a high-inflation environment is the real test ahead.

MTN reaching 100 million will be a headline worth watching. What happens to network quality when it does will be the story that follows.
