VALR Targets Institutional Crypto Adoption in Kenya Amid Growing Regulatory Clarity

Kenya’s cryptocurrency landscape is beginning to evolve beyond retail trading and speculation. The conversation is now shifting toward institutional involvement, regulatory collaboration, and stronger financial infrastructure. One company positioning itself within this transition is VALR.

During the Kenya Blockchain and Crypto Conference, Peter Mwangi, VALR’s Country Manager for Kenya, explained that the next phase of crypto growth in the country will likely be driven by institutions rather than individual traders.

For years, crypto adoption in Kenya has largely been fueled by retail users such as freelancers, traders, and tech-savvy early adopters operating within a market that lacked clear regulation and stability.

According to Mwangi, the industry is now moving toward a more structured ecosystem focused on compliance, infrastructure, and integration with traditional finance. This includes institutional-grade trading solutions, improved liquidity access, and financial products designed to fit within existing economic systems.

He also pointed out that Kenyan regulators and policymakers are becoming more open to engaging with the crypto sector. Mwangi noted that government agencies and lawmakers are increasingly interested in understanding blockchain technology and digital assets, signaling a move toward more organized oversight.

If balanced regulations are introduced, they could encourage institutional participation, support local innovation, and create fair opportunities for both international and Kenyan crypto companies.

Mwangi compared the current development of blockchain technology to the rise of mobile money in Kenya. While mobile money expanded financial inclusion locally, crypto and blockchain could potentially provide access to international markets, alternative investment opportunities, and decentralized financial systems.

VALR is focusing heavily on institutional adoption by developing infrastructure that can support banks and financial institutions, facilitate cross-border liquidity, and prepare the market for tokenized financial products.

As the relationship between traditional finance and cryptocurrency continues to grow, the industry may gradually shift from retail-driven activity to large-scale institutional investment. This transition could improve market stability, increase credibility, and support long-term growth within Kenya’s digital asset economy.
